Cursillo

"I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from Me you can do nothing."  -John 15:5

What Is Lutheran Cursillo?

You might have heard about Cursillo, maybe even have friends who have attended a Cursillo Weekend. But do you know what Cursillo is? It is a three day Lutheran Retreat that is held 2-3 times per year at a retreat center in Pomona. The event runs from Thursday evening through Sunday evening. Men and women attend separate weekends. This retreat is no cost to you. It is paid for entirely by people who are members of the Cursillo Community. The weekend consists of 10 short 20 minute talks from lay people and 5 talks from pastors. There are also 5 meditations.  You can expect plenty of food, snacks, music, skits, fun, and a few special gifts of love from the Lord that are yours to keep. The Cursillo Community is inviting you to our monthly praise service as an opportunity for you to get to know some of us and see who we are. The praise service will consist of praise music, a couple of lay speakers who will explain how Cursillo has impacted their lives and communion.

So please come spend some time with us so we can get to know you and
you can get to know us.

Lutheran Cursillo of Southern California is a leadership development organization serving all Lutheran churches.  We are a lay-led movement focused on preparing strong Christian leaders to go back into their churches and communities and serve.hat is Lutheran Cursillo?

As a self-supporting organization, we operate independently of any synod, branch or other church body, but adhere to the core values and teachings of the Lutheran faith. At least one Lutheran Pastor is present on every Cursillo weekend, and a Lutheran Pastor sits on our governing board.

Q: What happens on a Cursillo weekend?
A: Every Cursillo weekend entails ten 15-20 minute talks given by laypersons on various topics such as Leaders, Study, Christian Community and Laity. Five clergy talks are given on different aspects and perspectives of God's grace. There are also five meditations given at chapel time. These fifteen talks and five meditations form the core of the Cursillo and are common to all weekend experiences. There are various other events on a Cursillo weekend that serve to enhance and exemplify those talks and meditations. Those elements are envisioned, chosen, designed, scheduled or otherwise implemented by the lay director for the weekend under the consult and guidance of a Lutheran pastor.

Q: What are the requirements to attend a Cursillo weekened?
A: To attend a Cursillo weekend, you must be a baptized member in good standing at a Lutheran church. You will need to be paired with a sponsor who has been through a Cursillo or similar three-day weekend, and have your pastor endorse your reservation request. We recommend praying about it first, then talk to your pastor about what you may be able to gain from attending a Cursillo weekend before applying.

Q: How much does it cost to attend a Cursillo weekend?
A: Nothing. Attendance at a Cursillo weekend is a free gift to you, and what you do with it is your gift back to God.

For more information contact Pastor Brian, Gus and Susan Sauter or one of the many members of Our Redeemer that have attended and worked a Cursillo weekend.
